Who is at high risk of getting very sick from the flu?

Anyone can get the flu (including healthy people) and serious problems related to the flu may occur at any age. However, some people are at higher risk of developing serious flu-related complications if they get sick. Severe cases are more likely to occur in the following people:

  • Adults age 65 or older
  • People of any age with underlying medical conditions
  • Children less than 5 years old 
  • Pregnant women
