Wearing a face mask correctly is very important in preventing the spread of COVID-19. Some masks and respirators offer higher levels of protection than others, and some may be harder to tolerate or wear consistently than others. It is most important to wear a well-fitted mask or respirator correctly that is comfortable for you and that provides good protection.

The best way to wear a face mask is to:

  • Make sure your mask fits snugly against your face. Gaps in and out around the edges of the mask can let in air with respiratory droplets. 
  • Pick a mask with layers. A mask with layers will stop more respiratory droplets getting inside your mask or escaping from your mask if you are sick. You can also wear one disposable mask underneath a cloth mask. 

The best face mask is one that fits well and that you will wear consistently.
